2012 Golden Rose Stakes betting odds

The Gai Waterhouse trained Kabayan has been the best backed runner heading into the first Group 1 race of the Spring the Golden Rose. Kabayan opened as the clear second favourite for the Golden Rose and has been backed from $4.60 into $4.20 in early markets. Nechita will remain the favourite for the race and has also seen some solid backing. Victorian galloper Shamexpress has paid the late entry fee for the race showing the connections are confident which has shortened his odds slightly from $12 into $11. Golden Rose Stakes day Tips – 2012

The $1 Million Golden Rose (1400m) is the first major of the season in Australia and it’ll be run and won this Saturday at Rosehill. The favourite will be boom filly Nechita for Patinack. She was quite dominant a few weeks back at Warwick Farm and she’ll take a stack of beating. But I don’t think it’ll be a one act affair, with horses such as Kabayan, Your Song and Shamexpress all posing as serious threats.

About the Golden Rose Stakes

The Golden Rose is a Group 1 set weights horse race held at Rosehill Racecourse in Sydney. This event is an important part of the Sydney spring racing carnival, and is run over a distance of 1400 metres. With $1,000,000 in prize money up for grabs in this event, the Golden Rose always manages to attract a top quality field.

The Golden Rose is one of the richest events during the Sydney spring carnival, making it an important race to watch in the lead up to events like the Cox Plate, Caulfield Cup, and Melbourne Cup. It is also the first Group 1 race of the spring season, where it is held on the same day as the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes and Group 3 Kingston Town Stakes.

The traditional lead up event for this race has been the Group 3 Run to the Rose, which is held on the same track one month earlier. Some of the Golden Rose winners who have doubled up with a win in this event include Denman in 2009 and Paratroopers in 2005. In 2006, third place horse in the Golden Rose, Mentality, first tasted victory in the Run to the Rose. Other lead up events include the Up and Coming Stakes and the Silver Shadow Stakes.

In recent years, both Manawanui and Court Command managed to win the Up and Coming Stakes and Golden Rose double in 2011 and 2006 respectively, with 2008 winner Duporth placing third in the Up and Coming Stakes. Some of the horses who compete in the Golden Rose may go on to race in events like the Group 3 Newcastle Spring Stakes and various races during the Melbourne spring racing carnival.

The Golden Rose has been run since 1978, making it a relative newcomer on the racing circuit. It was known as the STC Peter Pan Stakes until 2005. The Golden Rose was elevated to a Group 1 event in 2009, after being a Group 2, Group 3, and Listed race at different times during its history.

Recent winners of the Golden Rose include Duporth in 2008, Denman in 2009, Toorak Toff in 2010, Manawanui in 2011, and Epaulette in 2012. Epaulette won the event ahead of Albrecht in second position and Ashokan in third.
